"ART - THE HARD-WON GIFT"
an evening with artist / educator
JOHN YOTHERS
Renaissance Art Gallery presents a lecture by Mt. Lebanan, PA artist and educator John Yothers entitled "ART - THE HARD-WON GIFT." It will be held on Wednesday evening, May 15 from 7:30 to 8:30 at the gallery located at 428 Washington Avenue in Carnegie, PA.
A truly talented and award-winning artist in numerous media, Mr. Yothers' presentation will explore the process of learning to draw. He prefaces the discussion by telling us, "On many occasions, I've been told by someone viewing a drawing or painting that I labored over and maybe got a bit lucky with, how fortunate I am to be 'gifted'. I'm not sure I understand what they mean by that, but I assure you that this is not something that was simply bestowed upon me. It is with this in mind that I decided rather than presenting yet another 'lesson on how to draw', it might be more interesting and informative to discuss and demonstrate how the process of learning to draw unfolds, from early childhood scribbling through the crises of adolescence and on into adulthood, including an explanation of how it's possible to interpret the three dimensional world on a two dimensional surface."
John light-heartedly adds, " When I was a child, I can remember lying on the floor scribbling away with a death grip on a big fat crayon. I was trying to give form and substance to my feelings and to make sense out of the world in which I found myself. I'm still trying to do the same thing ... I just hold the crayon a bit more gently now!"
In addition to being a master artist, John is also an educator who has taught art at all levels from kindergarten through college, as well as an Adjunct Professor of Fine Art and Education at Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, PA. Receiving his Bachelor's degree in Art education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1964, John also holds a Masters in Fine Art from West Virginia University as well as post-graduate work at Carnegie-Mellon University.
Pat Jander, co-owner of Renaissance Gallery says, "We are pleased to host this lecture and once again welcome John back to Renaissance Gallery. My husband and I were first exposed to his outstanding talent and body of work during an event at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort several years back, and have subsequently become amazed by not only his talent, but by his vast knowledge in the field of art. It is a real joy to represent his work as an artist, utilize his wealth of knowledge within our industry and, most importantly, be able to share a friendship."
This lecture is highly recommended for art enthusiasts, students and educators. It will run approximately 45 minutes, followed by time set aside for questions and answers. In addition to the lecture, a representative sample of Mr. Yothers' work will be on display at the gallery. There is no cost, but seating is limited.
