BIOGRAPHY
Pittsburgh's Louisa Yee is a native of Hong Kong. Her interest in art began at an early age and developed as she entered adulthood. Upon completing her Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from the University of Hong Kong, she took advantage of an opportunity to teach in North Borneo. It was an impressionable time in which she developed deep roots in nature.
After teaching for three and a half years, she was ready to return to civilization. In order to broaden her horizons, she studied at the University of Georgia and recieved an M.F.A. in painting and drawing. During this time she also studied briefly in Italy.
In the years following her degree, she painted primarily in oil and tempera, occasionally returning to Chinese watercolor. She gradually moved toward watercolor as her primary medium. Over the years, she developed a technique of combining transparent watercolor and designer gouache to transmit images on a soft, translucent surface.
In the process of evolution, she continually realizes the multidimensional quality of the self and other aspects of reality. Her art has taken on a new language: the language of energy ... chi. Form, angle and color are still the vocabulary. The psyche of the artwork, however, is borne from energy.
Ms. Yee is a member of the Pittsburgh Watercolor Society, Associated Artists of Pittsburgh and the Sumi-e Society of America. Along with her husband, Henry, she has resided in Bethel Park, PA, a suburb of Pittsburgh, since 1978.
