SAM KOLMEN

Sam Kolmen is an exciting artist with an equally exciting background in the medical profession. Holding a Doctorate in Physiology from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX, Dr. Kolmen is a well traveled physiologist, medical educator, researcher and administrator. His art began to develop as a hobby of sketching and doodling and, at the urging of colleagues, developed into experimentation with oils. While deputy dean of the Hahnemann School of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA, he joined the Main Line and Wayne Centers for the Arts.

He continued painting after moving to Pittsburgh as Director of the Office of Medical Education and Research at Mercy Hospital. Retiring in 1994, Sam has continued painting at his home studio and at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and the North Hills Art Center. He has participated in numerous juried shows and held individual exhibits throughout the area. Using oils and acrylics, his experimentation with shapes, perspectives, colors and textures have produced highly provocative images that rivet the eye and free the imagination.
